Healthy Weight Gain during Pregnancy Healthy weight gain during pregnancy is the ideal weight increase that should be gained by the pregnant woman along her entire pregnancy. Weight gain during pregnancy is carefully monitored by the doctor as part of regular check-up of pregnant women to determine her health condition. Healthy weight gain during the pregnancy should be gradual because sudden increase or decrease on weight may tend to lead on some complications during the pregnancy period. Diet is not recommended during pregnancy period because this may restrict the nutrients and essential vitamins required to a healthy pregnancy. Having healthy eating habit is the ideal style to make a healthy pregnancy and at the same time to have a healthy weight gain during pregnancy. The pregnant women should avoid junk foods, alcohol, soda and other unhealthy foods especially those foods that contains too much salt and preservatives such as sausages, bacon, hams and salamis. The healthy weight gain during pregnancy can be achieved when a pregnant woman adds fruits, vegetables and other protein and calcium packed foods to her diet. Taking prenatal vitamins is also essential to nurture the health of the baby to meet the requirements in conceiving a healthy baby. The healthy weight gain during pregnancy is basically around 25 to 30 pounds at the end of the period. This weight gain is due to the retention of amniotic fluid, uterine enlargement, the baby, placenta, maternal breast tissue, maternal blood volume, fluids in maternal tissue and maternal fat stores.
